Car11 - Maroons

Maroons.

Maroons were runaway slaves who formed gangs and even built their own villages in the less accessible parts of many Caribbean islands. Perhaps the most famous were the Maroons of Jamaica, who finally negotiated a surrender when the government hired 40 Cuban chasseurs and their fierce hounds to hunt them down. They were shipped out to Halifax, Nova Scotia and formed Canada's first Black community. Several Maroon gangs in St. Domingue (Haiti) formed the nuclei of guerilla forces after the slave revolt in 1791.
