28S-ABP-103 - Lofted Cow Shed with Archway
It was often the case that to maximise space requirements in a farmyard that gateways were lofted from an adjoining building, in this instance we take our example from the cow shed at La Haye Sainte. The hayloft above this cow shed extends over with an arch above the gateway. One of the crops a Farmer would harvest was hay, which would then be stored in the field in ricks, later the hay was moved to a Hay Loft ready for use or for sale. Though this design of building could just as easily have been a stable with granary (for storing grain) aloft.
