Homunculus.
Homunculi are products of a darker alchemy–that is, alchemy with the intention of artificially creating life, rather than altering base metals to precious ones. Though the supposed practice of creating homunculi goes back centuries, the most famous account comes from diaries of the butler of Tyrolian Count Johann Ferdinand von Kufstein (incidentally, with the help of an Italian mystic) discusses the creation of a series of tiny homunculi in 1775. Rumours around Venice speak to much larger humanoid beings, standing at the average height of a man or larger, but of a pale complexion, of an odd bearing, and seemingly with abilities that far surpass those of a normal person.
